My Jurassic Era

I have a lot more work to do, and I’m still on it watching Jurassic Park at the same time. This blog post is just a welcome break from from work, before I get back to it again! Couldn’t help but being taken back in time. I’ve always been a science fiction buff. I would’ve read all the Verne classics(even believe some of it) to those by Wells and still don’t mind the occasional sci-fi read. Science fiction movies, I never miss them. No matter how bad the reviews; or what anyone says. It does not matter!

It was 1994, when Jurassic Park was released in India. We were in south Delhi and the very famous (and still popular) Priya cinema was just a 10 minute walk away from home. My brother had bought the exclusive first day tickets to the show. I still remember, the tickets were in the shape of a  T-Rex. Those were the years when all of us used to head for movies together. I was still a kid, and my brother was on the wrong side of his teens.

That’s when the love affair with sci-fi movies started. I would’ve not missed a single one; well mostly! Those times, Dad and I used to go for just about any new movie that was released. Some of the popular haunts were Priya Cinema followed by a quick meal at Arabian Nights(not sure if its still there), Chanakya Cinema followed by pork momos outside (heard it shut down) and PVR Saket (the first multiplex in India if I am not wrong) and some other cinema halls. We once watched three of the Star Wars movies back to back the same day! The golden age of multiplexes when tickets were still less than 100 bucks!

Watching some of the scenes in the movie Jurassic Park now like when the kids flip after seeing the CD ROM operated touch screen computer, or when she hacks into a UNIX system are totally priceless! Sam Neil was still young, and took a welcome break from some of the diabolical roles he had done previously. Jeff Goldblum was married to sci-fi movies and this was no different. I still get the creeps when I think of the movie – Fly where he slowly transforms into a fly after a science experiment gone horribly wrong.

Actually I don’t even know where I am going with this blog post! Its just one of those moments when you come across something which takes you back in time and reminds you of your childhood, the good times and the fun times. I’m 27 now, and family holds a different meaning now. Family outings aren’t the same since I am not the kid, and my folks are in their second childhood. We go out to the mall or watch a movie, and I see them happily ordering around and pick up the tab; or we go shopping and its a joy seeing them pick up the costliest brands and I take the tab for those too. We all grow up, and just when we think things couldn’t get any worse; there are these small reminders here and there and moments you spend with kids like your parents that take you back in time. They remind you of your roots. To be a good human, a good man. One your loved ones would be truly proud off. I am that kind of guy who gets all emotional watching sci-fi movies. Go knock yourself out!

On a passing note, here is how I feel about Valentine’s Day
