Re-Landscaping Web Commerce

This is a pretty interesting video I came across online. This nifty video by Good Magazine and IBM puts across some interesting statistics, what Digital Buzz also likes to call Social Commerce.

After seeing the video, I was making a mental map of the things I would like to see with the e-commerce websites.

  • Build a facebook app / myspace app, that lets you show off your shopping cart or what you bought recently. This could also add a small figure of the money saved by discounts compared to Maximum Retail Price.
  • Build a viral using the apps that you build. If someone else clicks on the app of  a product and buys it as well, there could be a discount coupon given to the referrer.
  • Allow users to tweet about their recent purchase with twitter API. This will also encourage discussion and bring you more followers.
  • Keep in touch with customers on twitter, by following them automatically when they register. Make it optional to provide the twitter ID.
  • Encourage bloggers to talk about you, by filling out a small form after a week or so after the purchase. This could be incentivised as well by rewarding some discount coupon or code. If future purchases are made from the blogger’s website, this could be tracked as well.
  • Bad reviews are also good because it gives you the opportunity to make this better for the customer and also making it public.
  • Allow users to recommend products by integrating social networking links.

These are some thoughts that came to me randomly. I am assuming that the retailer has a social media accounts already. I am also skipping the bit social media best practices; and just ideas on what a customer could wish for when shopping online.

Do pen your thoughts on what else could be done by e-commerce websites.
